The Trebižat River Valley
West Herzegovina’s synergy of its cultural and natural heritage
The Trebižat River, an unhindered waterway that meanders from the far corner of western Herzegovina to its mouth at Čapljina, is a major tributary to the Neretva River. It is also the historical lifeline of Western Herzegovina which is home to some of the oldest recorded settlements in the country. This perfect fusion of culture and nature has recently given new definition to this region. The entire length of the Trebizat River, highlighted by the Kravice Waterfall near Ljubuski, is now a cultural and natural heritage trail thanks to funding by the European Union. The Trebižat, a calm and crystal clear river, besides being the lifeline of the many settlements built along its banks, can be navigated by canoe from just below the Kravice Waterfalls north of Čapljina. This less-known region hides more than a handful of surprises for those willing to explore West Herzegovina’s outback.
Kravice Waterfalls
This is quite possibly the most beautiful waterfall in the country. It runs neck and neck with Strbacki Buk in Una National Park in the far northwest. Kravice has become a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike. Many come to just gawk at its beauty but bring a picnic blanket and a bathing suit to get the best experience out of this truly remarkable natural monument.
Humac Monastery/Museum/Art Gallery
Religious or not, this is a fascinating place to check out in the Trebizat River Valley just west of Ljubuski towards the Croatian border. The monastery was built in the late 19th century as the Ottoman Empire began to disintegrate. It is home to the country’s oldest museum being founded in 1884. The museum is a timeline of Herzegovina’s rich history dating back from the Paleolithic Age to today. Galerija Majka, also found within the compound, is an impressive collection of artwork from local and international artists. Most have a religious theme to them but they cover greatly diverse styles and genres. Well worth the visit!
Herceg Stjepan Fortress
This protected national monument fortress is perched on the hilltop above Ljubuski and the large valley that divides Bosnia and Herzegovina from Croatia. It is believed to have been built in the mid 1400’s by the royal Kosaca family. It is open year round to visitors and with the new reconstruction efforts the access and content is an interesting peak into the strategic significance of medieval settlements.
