Konjic
Highlands for nature lovers
Located between the mountains of Prenj, Bjelašnica, and Bitovinja, Konjic is 64 kilometers from Sarajevo. It is on the Neretva River and right next to Jablaničko Lake. Even though it might seem small and an unlikely tourist destination, Konjic has a lot to offer. Due to abundance of water – the Neretva runs through the center of town – Konjic is known as a rafting city. The glacial Boračko Lake and the artificial Jablaničko Lake are both heavenly for fishermen. Also, beautiful beaches and clear water make them popular camping sites.
Konjic has a long history. It was mentioned as early as the 4th century BC. The community has been continuously settled for over 4,000 years. There are numerous stećak findings in the area, and one of the stećci from Konjic was presented at Montreal’s World Expo in 1967.
Today, Konjic is most easily recognized by its beautiful, six-arched Old Stone Bridge. The bridge was originally built in 1682. It was destroyed in 1943 by German warplanes. Last year, 66 years after its destruction, the bridge was rebuilt with funding from the Turkish government.
Konjic has a long woodcarving tradition. The Nikšić family has been in this business for almost a hundred years. In their shops, you can find some exquisite and unique pieces of furniture. Everything is handmade and the carving techniques are the same as a century ago.
Along with rafting, kayaking, trekking, and hiking possibilities, Konjic is still discovering its own potential.
