Via Dinarica

Walking the Spine of Herzegovina

Via Dinarica is not just a trail. It is a system of long-distance hiking and adventure routes stretching across the Dinaric Alps of the western Balkans, connecting Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, with sections continuing toward North Macedonia and Albania.

Launched in 2010, the Via Dinarica project was conceived to promote sustainable tourism and the preservation of local natural and cultural heritage, while at the same time offering one of the most comprehensive outdoor experiences in this part of Europe. In Herzegovina, Via Dinarica runs through the heart of the high karst, across mountain ranges that have shaped the identity of this landscape.

ROUTE STRUCTURE

Via Dinarica consists of three main trails that together form a unique network of experiences:

  • White Trail – runs through high mountain terrain and represents the most demanding part of the system, intended for experienced hikers
  • Green Trail – passes through the interior of the region, linking mountains, villages and cultural landscapes (still under development)
  • Blue Trail – follows the Adriatic coastline and its hinterland (still under development)

In Herzegovina, the focus is primarily on the White and Green Trails, where mountain landscapes meet traditional ways of life.

WHO IT APPEALS TO – AND WHY

Via Dinarica attracts travelers seeking long-distance, connected and meaningful movement through space, rather than isolated one-day excursions.

It is especially appealing to:

  • experienced hikers and long-distance trekkers
  • solo hikers and travelers in search of introspective experiences
  • lovers of slow and sustainable tourism
  • adventurers of different levels, thanks to the diversity of sections

This is a route for those who want to understand the entire Dinaric region as a single, connected space.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Walking Via Dinarica in Herzegovina means moving through an uninterrupted mountain continuum. The route crosses some of Herzegovina’s most recognizable mountains and peaks: Prenj, Čvrsnica, Velež, Vran and Čabulja. These are mountains of strong character, with long ascents, open ridges and views that extend far beyond the local horizon.

Sections range from technically demanding high-mountain crossings to more moderate stages across plateaus and mountain villages. In addition to hiking, certain parts of the system also allow for cycling, kayaking, rafting and winter activities, depending on the season and location.

Accommodation is often simple and locally rooted: mountain huts, rural households and small private lodgings, further connecting travelers with the landscape and its people.

SUSTAINABILITY AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES

One of Via Dinarica’s core values is sustainability. The project is designed to:

  • support local hospitality and agriculture
  • valorize traditional skills and culture
  • protect the natural environment through responsible, controlled tourism

The route is not merely a passage through landscape, but a tool for the long-term development of the communities that live along it.

PRACTICAL TIPS

  • The route crosses multiple countries – planning is essential
  • Navigation (GPS and maps) is necessary
  • Supplies are not always available along every section
  • Best season: late spring to early autumn
  • Respect the mountains, weather conditions and local customs
